My Blog is More Fashionable Than Yours!

This past weekend I met up with my friend Jessica from Heart on Homestead in Harrisonburg for some photos and girltalk. And really awful coffee. Ha!

It was meant to be an opportunity for Jess to play some with lighting with her camera, and for me to get some OOTD posts done by someone who knows their way around a DSLR. Well, it was cold and windy, and the hair that took me over an hour to do just kept blowing around out-of-control.

Right in Court Square was this amazing public chalkboard with 'Before I Die...receive love. give love. repeat' painted on it. Jess risked her life in the middle of the street to get this wicked cool shot!

I swore I'd never give in to the cotton-blazer movement, but I am in love with this jacket from Target. It is SO comfortable, and quite flattering regardless of shape.  Considering most days I don't leave my yoga pants and sweatshirts, I will make a conscious effort to wear this jacket- maybe for girls' night or a date night.

I picked up this t-shirt a year and a half ago at TJMaxx for under $5- I would say this is definitely my BEST find. I have to wear a tank under it, it's one of those boxy, short shirts, but come on, with that message I had to have it. I'm glad I finally took the tags off and wore this shirt!

Pink & Gold Half Moons

If you're on Pinterest, you've seen this manicure passing around, but have you seen the original source? No, me neither.  I have been searching for the original source for over 2 weeks now in the hopes of determining what the gold polish was.  You see, I couldn't find a dense gold glitter, there's plenty of silver dense glitters, but I couldn't find a gold one for the life of me!

Well, then I realized I already had the answer on my lemmings list: Butter London 'West End Wonderland,' it's perfect. And well, I was ready to recreate this magnificent manicure. And seriously, I couldn't wait another 5 days for Mani Monday to share this with you!

The pink is Butter London 'Teddy Girl,' a polish from my annual Butter London purchases at the BOGO Ulta Butter London sale in September. And of course as soon as I say that, I have to admit that I did pay full price for West End Wonderland. But come on, it's absolutely beautiful!

I used reinforcements from the office supply store to create the even half moons after 2 coats of West End Wonderland completely dried.  I then applied 2 quick coats of Teddy Girl, removed the reinforcements, and finished it off with a top coat.

Oscars Red Carpet Looks

I know I'm a day light on my thoughts of the Oscars Red Carpet looks, but manicures (Mani Monday) take precedence in my book.  Here are a few of my favorite looks from Sunday night.

Amanda Seyfried in Alexander McQueen

Amy Adams in Oscar de la Renta

Halle Berry in Versace

Jennifer Garner in Gucci

Kerry Washington in Miu Miu

Jennifer Lawrence in Christian Dior Couture

Naomie Harris in Vivienne Westwood

Norah Jones in Tadashi Shoji

Reese Witherspoon in Louis Vuitton

Charlize Theron in Christian Dior Couture

Naomi Watts in Armani Prive

Catherine Zeta-Jones in Zuhair Murad
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed myself watching the Oscars and Viggle'ing along! The music was magnificent, way better than the music performances at the Grammy's...seriously, why do artists perform new songs, perform what you're nominated for!

I love the fashion and beauty and the glamourousness (is that a word?) or Red Carpet events, do you?

Mani Monday: Julep Amy & Zoya Maisie

This is one of my favorite manicures in a long time- maybe because it's a change up from the usual pink and/or sparkly ones?

After belonging to Julep for over a year, I finally gave in and purchased my namesake Amy, and I am so glad I did.  I was hesitant at first, as the photos and swatches I saw were not very flattering, and well, not pink.

Oh, and Zoya Maisie's not so bad either! I ordered Maisie a few weeks during the Zoya promo, and patiently waited over 3 weeks for it to ship let alone get here! It's so pretty and reminds me of water in the Caribbean- where I wish I was right now!

Ten Minute, Under $50 Bathroom Makeover

This past weekend, I finally cleaned my master bathroom, I couldn't fight it any longer.  So, in an effort to motivate myself, I decided to give it a slight face lift. We painted it a few months ago, but only installed a new mirror and fixtures, I even reinstalled the old shower curtain- I was craving something different.

I don't know about you, but I am so ready for spring.  I decided what my blue bathroom needed was a pop of yellow, the color of spring. I started off with some flowers from Michael's, and added them to a vase I already had.

The flowers were $4.99/stem, 40% off, so for the bunch I paid $14.97. I love the scattered, wide array they are in, I think it makes them look real.

Next I moved to the other side of the sink, where my hair and beauty products are usually amassed:

This of course is pinterest-inspired, using a cake stand for products.  I picked this one up at TJMaxx for $5.99. I really wanted the larger square, but they only had circles in the larger size. I stuck with only keeping out the essentials, you know, like spray deodorant.  I may be like the last person on earth who uses it, but I love it. I went with natural deodorant for awhile, but Tom's irritated my skin, and Alba made me smell funky, and I'm NOT a sweater, believe me. TMI?

I am a bit of a snob when it comes to my hairspray, I only use Paul Mitchell Hold Me Tight finishing spray. It sprays a light mist, always evenly, and smells divine.  If you're looking for a stronger hairspray, I don't recommend this.  I like to spray a bit after I blow dry or style my hair, just to keep the fly aways under control.

There's no frills when it comes to this cabinet, I just was happy to find a basket at Target for $3.77 (& 5% off with my card) to hold all our medicines, band-aids, coughdrops, etc. They were all over the top shelf and kind of giving me anxiety! And yes, the open bottom shelf mainly contains my manicure essentials- cotton balls for removal, clippers, nail brush, and pedi supplies. My husband picked up the cabinet at Goodwill last year for $17, a good cleaning later and I'm in love.

I'm sharing this photo from Target as the curtain hanging in my bathroom is hard to see.  I LOVE this curtain, and figured at $19.99 (minus 5% card discount,) it was worth it.  The ombre pop of yellow brightens the bathroom, and also allows more light into the shower than the purple and silver one that was there before.

All in all, I spent $43.53, and my bathroom has a brighter, cleaner look to it. I have yet to hang any decorations on the wall or replace the floor, but until it is determined we're staying or moving, I am avoiding putting holes in the walls or investing for tile. Sorry for the toilet pic, I was trying to highlight my beautiful, ombre shower curtain!

Mani Monday: #iheartJulep Julep Maven Giveaway!

Happy Monday friends! How was your weekend? Mine was glorious, but as always, over too soon.  Today I want to talk to you about Julep. I know, I talk about Julep like all the time...but I just love it that much. And I've partnered with them to give a lucky reader a Maven Intro box for free!

If you're a regular reader, you know I'm obsessed with Julep. It has actually become my favorite brand of polish, and their beauty products impress me more and more each month. I feel that it's worth the monthly investment of $19.99, considering what you get. This past month, along with the 2-3 bottles of nail (color) polish, Julep sent out a nail treatment, the Oxygen Treatment, a new topcoat, Freedom, and an eyelash curler.  So, a traditional box received 2 colors or nail polish, a treatment, a topcoat, an eyelash curler, and of course Valentine's chocolates!

Julep provided me with a sample box to review, but I'm pretty sure i was already in love.  This manicure is 'Toni' with 'Vivien' as an accent nail.  I meant to do a glitter gradient on my ring finger, but Vivien is a little denser than I expected. All in all, a gorgeous manicure that I love to look at.

If you're just hearing about Julep Maven, or you've just been under a rock in the blogging world for awhile, here are the benefits of becoming a Julep Maven:

-Each month you can choose to change your style, send the box to a friend, or skip.
-Monthly box can be upgraded for the entire collection
-Each box comes with at least 2 polishes and a beauty product
-Every 2 people you refer, you get a month free

I joined Julep over a year ago, and look forward to the reveal email and my box with just as much excitement as the first time.  I eagerly track the shipment each morning, and literally squeal with joy and clap my hands in excitement when I see 'Out for Delivery' as the status.

If you're interested in joining the Julep Maven program, click here and use code 'JULEPVIP' to get your first box for a penny. Yes, a penny.  You will have to pay shipping of $3.99, but for a total of $4, it's worth it.  Can you beat 2-3 polishes and a beauty product for $4? You can cancel after your first month if you're dissatisfied or you feel it's not worth the $19.99.  But I'm pretty sure you won't!

To qualify for the giveaway, follow the instructions below, all entries will be verified. Once the winner is picked, I will contact the winner for their pick and submit the information to Julep!

Eggs Napoleon

I found this recipe on Pinterest and could not wait to make it.  It has become my favorite breakfast, and I look forward to planning meals with Tater Tots so I can use the recipe. You'll see why in a minute...

The original recipe can be found here, and the explanation. If you're like me, you associate 'tots' with the movie Napoleon Dynamite, hence the name of the recipe. The leftover 'tots' form a nest/crust for the egg, and add so much flavor.  And grease. Mmm, grease.

I adapted the recipe to what I had in my refrigerator, but you could honestly add anything you wanted- hot peppers, pepper jack cheese, bacon, green onions, the list goes on.

Eggs Napoleon
Serves 1

Ingredients
  • 6-10 tater tots, cooked and crumbled
  • 1 tsp butter
  • 1 Tbsp bell pepper, finely diced
  • 1 Tbsp onion, diced
  • 1 small clove garlic, diced
  • 1/8 cup cheese, shredded (mont jack, cheddar, mozza, etc.)
  • 1 egg
  • salt and pepper to taste
Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350. Preheat a small skillet over medium high heat.
  2. Melt butter in the skillet and add the onion and pepper, cook 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until starting to soften.
  3. Add the garlic and cook another minute, stirring occasionally.
  4. Spray a small ramekin dish with non-stick spray
  5. Stir the tots into the onion, pepper and garlic mixture, and pack into the ramekin
  6. Top with cheese.
  7. Crack an egg into the ramekin. Season with salt and pepper.
  8. Bake in the oven on the middle rack for 5 minutes.
  9. Broil on high for 5-6 minutes or until the eggs are set.

I throw a slice of porkroll into the same skillet while the egg is in the oven and enjoy with a cup of coffee. I can't believe I am admitting this, but this was the first time I've ever used a broiler. I've always been slightly afraid of it, afraid to burn the food, etc. But it was delicious and a necessary step. The first time I made this I just kept adding time to the timer while it baked, which worked, but the yolk hardened.  I don't know about you, but I love runny egg yolk! The boiler set the egg whites and cooked the egg to perfection.

I highly recommend this recipe!

Mani Monday: Holographic Baker Street

I'm not really that thrilled with this manicure, although it does photograph quite nicely! You can see Baker Street on it's own here, and the wonders of Hefesto here.  Although in the sun it gives the illusion of a perfect match, under normal lighting (and shade) it looks like Baker Street with a coat of silver glitter over it. Not good.

Hefesto is too dense of a holo glitter for darker colors like this, but it was worth a try.  It did catch my attention in the car under the lights in the Food Lion parking lot:

You can pick up Hefesto here for $8 (totally worth it!), and I saw the bling bottle of Baker Street at Sephora last weekend on Clearance!
