#Life Lately

Here's a little snap shot into my life lately, not like it's really anything to write home about. If you follow me on instagram or on facebook, you pretty much see the extent of my life anyways: juicing, nails, and work mainly, and then throw in an indulgent #thisiswhyijuice recipe. And you know what? As boring as it may sound, I love my life and wouldn't change a thing. Well, maybe find some new friends, but for now, my life is perfect.

{Juicing}

You may have noticed that my latest passion is juicing- I can't get enough. Researching new recipes, experimenting with new fruits and vegetables, hunting down unusual produce, and then actually tasting the juices and enjoying the healthy high that they bring, has taken up a large part of my life.

I will say I am extremely proud of my husband and I for incorporating juicing into our lifestyle. The past week or 2 we haven't been as strict due to traveling for work and social outings, but juicing has become what we do for lunch.  My mission to get healthy has begun with adding rather than taking away from our diets and lifestyle, and I am happy to report we've successfully added juicing!

{Home Improvements}

We started repurposing our deck, and as you can see from the first picture, it's been a long time coming! Our house was built in 1998 and I have a feeling it hasn't been touched since it was built-- what do you think? We've power washed it, gave it new life, and are now waiting for cooler weather to use Restore by Rustoleum and totally repurpose it.

{Downtime}

In the last month or so, my husband and I have visited my sister-in-law and niece in North Carolina, ran up to NJ for a quick one-night stay for my mom's 60th birthday (above,) and spent a glorious week here in Virginia Beach:

Sigh...can we go back? Or can we just move there? Seriously!

{Photography}

Aside from the obvious cell phone pictures above, can you tell I've been working on my photography skills? It's a steady, slow process- just when I think I have a handle on something, the light changes and I'm back at square one. The notebook above I picked up at Target and thought was absolutely the most perfect notebook I could ever find for taking notes on photography, right?

{This is Why I Juice}

I am super excited to start a new series of recipes on here with the hashtag of 'this is why I juice.' (#thisiswhyijuice.) As I stated above, we are all about adding healthy into our diets and lifestyle rather than taking away. The above pictures are an all-out Saturday morning breakfast at home, homemade {mostly organic} nachos, and homemade chicken-broccoli hot pockets, all fatty, indulgent, and absolutely delicious recipes that I will juice for any day! When I juice for lunch, I don't feel guilty indulging in a dinner like this every once in awhile, you know what I'm saying? I will be sharing these recipes in the coming weeks as well as cookie cakes, calzones, drinks, and more...please stay tuned!

Hopefully you enjoyed a glimpse into my life here in the boring ass country- what have you been up to?

ManiMonday: Illamasqua Jo'Mina + A Julep Giveaway!

This color was on my lemmings list for awhile, and was ecstatic to finally get this a few weeks ago for $8, through a swap group.  I believe one of the only places to get Illamasqua in the States is JCPenney salons and maybe Sephora? Either way, it's my only Illamasqua and such a bright and electric violet.  I didn't do so great of a clean up job of my previous (pink) manicure, so the photos are limited!

If you're interested in sharing your manicures, whether you're a blogger or not, send them along to me! This week I want to share Anne's manicure, gorgeous isn't it:

Pink Peacock

It took me 3 separate trips to Ulta to pick up these nail wraps by Elegant Touch, which are a white base with a peacock feather in silver, deep violet to turquoise gradient, and bright neon pink. I knew my primary coordinating nail color had to be neon pink to start with.  With 16 nail wraps left, I will have plenty of other options and combinations to play with!

The pink is Voltage Pink by China Glaze, my all time favorite neon pink- it practically glows in the dark it is so bright. All around I'd say this was a perfectly pink manicure with a pop of peacock!

Happy Monday my friends! Feel free to link up your manicures below, and take time to visit some of the other blogs- that's what link ups are for, right? Those of you that do not blog, feel free to email me a picture of your manicure and I will share it in a post next Monday.

If you are new here, please comment and say hello, I love meeting new people and finding new blogs.

Pink Kale Juice

This by far is our favorite juice, the sweetness from the watermelon and pink lady apples, completely negates the taste of kale and beets! I have never been a fan of beets, regardless of eating them growing up probably every other week. My sister, brothers and I were very fortunate to grow up with a SAHM, and ate homemade meals every night. I can say I can remember ordering takeout pizza maybe 2-3 times in our household, and that was when I was a senior in high school and my mom returned to working full time.  Beets were a regular side dish on our menu, and I choked them down, doing as I was told.

To this day I am still not a fan, but I LOVE juicing with them. As with many vegetables, much of the nutrients are lost when cooking or baking them, so I feel like I am doing my body justice by juicing them raw.  They are absolutely beautiful though, aren't they? Their color is so intense, often used as a natural dye in organic foods.

Nutritionally, beets contain sodium, magnesium, calcium, iron, and phosperous as well as high levels of fiber and vitamins A, C and niacin! You can read a Yahoo article here about the health benefits of beets, it's quite interesting.

Pink Kale Juice
Source
Makes: ~40 oz

7   Stalks of Kale
 Pink Lady Apples
 Large beet (peeled)
1⁄2 Small Round Watermelon
 Lime (peeled)

Juice and Enjoy!

I will note that this recipe does make a bit more than 40 ounces- my husband and I usually share a recipe, 40 ounces fills up 2 coke glasses. Depending on the size of your watermelon, this will easily make 60+ ounces.

As with other juices, I will drink 20 ounces for lunch with a sourdough pretzel and string cheese. This keeps me filled until about 4:45pm, right about when I'm wrapping up with work. I will usually run downstairs and grab some cherries or grapes and almonds to sustain me until 6pm when I start dinner.  Considering it's a liquid lunch (in a healthy way,) that's not bad. Most days I eat a "solid" lunch I find myself getting hungry around the same time, if not sooner.

*Tip- depending on the freshness of your beet(s,) use a ziplock sandwich bag as a glove while peeling, cutting, and feeding the juicer. The juice will temporarily dye your hands, countertops, etc. Just use extra caution!

Cheers to better health my friends!

Mani Monday: Maybelline Pretty in Polka

Happy Mani Monday! I am happy to be filling in for Heather of Glitter & Gloss today as a cohost of Mani Monday with Em of Anna Delores. Funny story...I immediately felt akin to Em because I am Amy Dolores and (I thought) she was Anna Delores-- long lost sisters! Anyhoo...

I walked past this a few times, but made a trip to RiteAid last week out of boredom and just had to pick it up.  What I love is that the drug store brands like Maybelline are really picking up their game.  Revlon pretty much copies Deborah Lippmann exactly, and now Maybelline is copying a lot of the independent brands. I believe this is a close copy of Lynderella's Connect the Dots (or something like that!) Am I close?

There is an orange and a green-jade version, as well as a straight black and white (yes, I did pick it up!) that looks like a bottle of salt and pepper. The next time I use it I may paint one coats of a similar pink - I needed to use 3 coats and it's a little bit of overkill with the polka dots in my opinion.

Link up your weekly manicures below and take some time to visit some new blogs. Happy Monday!

Essie Bikini So Teeny

Without a doubt one of my top 10 polishes, Essie 'Bikini So Teeny' is such a bright, sparkling, cornflower blue, it pops on your fingers! What is a cornflower you ask? I had to research it myself and came across multiple photos like this:

{Source}
I've never seen a cornflower in person, and after further research see that it's due to the fact that they're native to Europe. Hmm.

Hope you had a great weekend, welcome to Monday my friends. Here's to a week that flies by!

Juicing

Once we got rid of cable a few months ago, I went on a Netflix bender, and watched a bunch of food documentaries such as Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead, Hungry For Change, and Forks Over Knives. Once you watch one, you eagerly look forward to the next one, they’re quite addicting.  And scary. And informative all at the same time.

Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead is what started me thinking about juicing, and what sold my husband on it. It’s the story of Joe, who juiced for 60 days while traveling across the US, and later goes on to help others.  Once we decided we wanted to start juicing, I started liking groups, companies and movie pages on Facebook and started researching which juicer we wanted.  We used this buying guide by the team that made Hungry for Change, and ended up picking up a Hurom juicer.

We discussed doing the detox, which depending on your choice can be all juicing for 3 days, 10 days, 15 days, or up to 60, but I couldn’t do it. I know I’d fail…I had to be honest with myself, you know? For now we’re juicing 4-5 days a week for lunch, with the ultimate goal of 7 days a week replacing one meal.

The most exciting part of the whole juicing experience is my husband’s enthusiasm for it. For those of you that know him, a balanced meal for him is boxed mac n’ cheese and a huge coke, a bacon cheese burger minus the lettuce, tomato slice, and onion, or a plate of wings. No vegetables in sight. And that has changed- he is just as much or more excited as I am! I was away for a night for a girls night and he juiced all on his own, making his own “brew” of all the leftover produce in the fridge-I was SO proud of him!

Mean Green, pictured in the above photos is the first juice we tried, and one that has become a staple in our juicing routine. Mean Green is from the documentary 'Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead', a beautiful, bright green juice containing kale, cucumber, celery, ginger, lemon, and granny smith apples.

Mean Green 1 Bulk of kale
4 Stalks of celery
1 Cucumber
2 granny smith apples
½ lemon
Ginger root (thumb sized)

Thoroughly clean and slice up the produce and process through your juicer.
---

I wanted to be completely honest with you and share the pros and cons with you- there are a few of both, but the pros far outweigh the cons. Come to think of it, the only con I can think of is the burping through the day. Is this common, those of you that juice? It's especially strong when we juice the Mean Green- for about 3 hours afterwards I burp up the taste of the juice.

Speaking of the taste, it's something that grows on you... I personally love fruits and vegetables of pretty much any kind, so it doesn't bother me much. That being said, here's my initial juicing reaction face:

Charming, I know...but you know what? I've come to love the taste of it, for I know the benefits it is bringing me and the surge of energy that is to come. This is something we are committed to continuing, and I am happy to report we're going on a month of juicing.

 I am excited to start sharing juicing recipes with you as well as the benefits of making juicing a part of a healthy lifestyle.
